Signs your garage door spring is broken

Most springs fail suddenly. These are the usual clues:

  • A loud bang from the garage, followed by a door that won't lift
  • The opener motor runs but the door barely moves, or doesn't move at all
  • A visible gap in the spring above the door
  • Cables hanging loose or off the drums
  • The door rises crooked or sags to one side

How a spring replacement works

No guessing and no surprise at the door.

  1. Diagnose and quote

We confirm the spring type, measure the door, and check its weight, because the spring has to match the door. You get the price before we start.

  2. Replace and inspect

We install the new springs. If your door has two and one broke, we usually recommend replacing both. We also check cables, drums, bearings and rollers.

  3. Balance and test

We balance the door, test the safety reverse, and lubricate moving parts. You should be able to lift the door smoothly by hand when we're done.

What decides the price

We don't post a flat number because springs aren't one-size-fits-all. These are the factors:

  • Spring type: torsion (mounted above the door) or extension (along the side tracks)
  • Door weight and size, such as a 16x7 double or a 9x7 single
  • Whether one spring or a pair is replaced
  • Cycle rating: standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, and longer-life options exist
  • Worn cables, drums, bearings or rollers found along the way

Call with your door size and what you're seeing, and we'll quote it over the phone.

Spring replacement in Nashville and Middle Tennessee

Humid Middle Tennessee summers speed up rust on springs and hardware. A rusty, dry spring works harder and can fail earlier, so lubrication and inspection pay off here.

Many newer homes in Franklin, Mount Juliet and Murfreesboro came with builder-installed doors, which often have standard-cycle springs. If yours is several years old and gets used daily, it's worth knowing how close it is to the end.

Spring replacement questions in Nashville

Should I replace one spring or both?
If your door has two springs and one breaks, we usually recommend replacing both. They've done the same number of cycles, so the other is likely close to failing.
Can I open the door by hand if the spring is broken?
We recommend against it. The door can be very heavy and may fall. If you're stuck, call us and we'll tell you the safest way to proceed.
How long does a spring replacement take?
Typically about an hour or two on site. It takes longer if cables, drums or other parts also need replacing.
How long do new springs last?
Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 open-and-close cycles. At four trips a day, that's under seven years. Higher-cycle springs are available if you use the door a lot.
Does humidity affect garage door springs?
Yes. Rust adds friction and weakens metal over time. A yearly tune-up with fresh lubricant helps springs last, but every spring still has a limited cycle life.
